Paper Tiles / In Europe, 1kg of paper per person per day is wasted; even though a 70% is recycled, a big part end up in the landfill, paper can in fact be recycled up to 6 times, then its fibres get too short to be further processed. Nevertheless, lots of types of paper can not be recycled because contaminated or mixed with other materials, such as inks, binders or other materials present in the paper which are polluting agents if not discarded properly and carefully. This project wants to re-evaluate waste and investigate the possibility of up-cycling paper.
The material research combines exhausted paper with porcelain and results in a ceramic foam that reduces the amount of porcelain needed and reuses paper that would likely end up in the landfill.
The open and uneven structure of the material finally has been used to make sound dampening wall tiles. Porcelain, paper, pigments
